The Rams season came to a close on Wednesday night in the Section 8AA title game with a 6-0 shutout loss to their rival Moorhead Spuds at Ralph Engelstad Arena.
The Spuds tallied four times in the opening period to take control of this game early with senior Matt Herbranson with a pair of goals in the opening frame. Other Spuds goal scorers included Cole O’Connel, and Jack Stetz. Moorhead outshot the Rams for the period 16-4 and chasing Rams starting goaltender Willie Woolever following the second Herbranson goal at 12:38 of the period.
The second period, the Rams seemed to find their legs and generating their best scoring opportunities for the game but were not able to solve Spuds netminder Lance Leonard. Roseau outshot the Spuds for the period 14-4 with the Spuds holding a 4-0 lead through two periods.
The Rams did not start the third period on a good note, taking a pair of penalties early including a 5-minutes checking from behind penalty that resulted in two power play goals by Carter Howell and Carson Kosobud. With Moorhead with a commanding lead at 6-0 the game went into running time and the Spuds securing a shutout victory and the Section 8AA title.
Lance Leonard pick up the shutout victory turning aside all 23 Ram shots he faced while a combined effort from Willie Woolever and Izaak Olson closed with 21 saves on 27 Spud shots.
With the loss the Rams close out the season with an 18-10 record while the Spuds enter state tournament play with an impressive 22-3-3 record.
Congratulations to Bryden Stoskopf and Alec Severson on being named to the 2016-2017 All-Marriucci Conference team.
